With the lightest of touches, the CranioSacral Therapist can palpate the craniosacral system – the soft tissues and fluids that surround, protect and nourish your brain and spinal cord. Stress, injuries and traumas cause tension in these tissues, which in turn compromise the function of the central nervous system – and potentially nearly every other system in your body.
CranioSacral Therapy helps release those tensions, thereby allowing your whole body to relax and self-heal. As your central nervous system is free to come into balance, pain and emotional stress is relieved, your immune system is supported and overall health and well-being are promoted.
Originally, I learned CranioSacral Therapy to work with the babies in my midwifery practice who had experienced challenging births, or those needing support around breastfeeding or sleeping. By using gentle touch – the weight of a nickel – babies would respond with unwinding, relaxing and falling into a deep sleep. Afterwards their mamas would note greater calmness and ease with breastfeeding, sleeping and behavior.
In adults, CST is noted for relieving a wide range of pain and dysfunction in the body including headaches, neck/back pain, IBS, fibromyalgia, scoliosis, anxiety/depression and immune system disorders. CST can be safely received during pregnancy. I especially like using it with my fertility clients, to relieve stress and support hormonal balance in the luteal phase of their cycles.
What to expect during a CST session : You will be fully clothed and reclining on my massage table. I begin by gently touching various points on your body to track the rhythm of your cerebrospinal fluid. By careful listening with my hands, I can locate areas of weak fluid flow and tissue motion. Using delicate touch techniques, I will release areas of restriction, thereby improving the function of your central nervous system. Clients find the sessions are deeply calming and relaxing, often falling asleep.
